# Water Damage Laptop: What to Do in the First Hour

The first hour matters more than anything else. Most water-damaged laptops we save at Technoland are the ones where the customer did the right things in the first 60 minutes. Most of the ones we can't save had something done wrong in the same window.

Here's exactly what to do, in order.

1. Power It Off Immediately

Don't wait to save your work. Don't let it finish what it's doing. The longer power flows through wet circuits, the more damage you get from electrolysis (the chemical reaction that destroys traces and components when liquid plus electricity meet).

Hold the power button for 10 seconds until it shuts off. If you can pull the battery, pull it. On most modern laptops the battery is internal and you can't remove it without opening the case — that's fine, just shut it down.

2. Unplug Everything

Charger out. USB devices out. External monitor out. SD card out. The laptop should be completely disconnected from any power source.

3. Flip It Upside Down (Carefully)

Open the laptop, flip it so the keyboard faces down, and rest it on a folded towel in a tent shape. This lets gravity pull liquid out instead of deeper into the device.

Do not shake it. Do not blow into it. Do not try to drain it by tilting one corner up — you might just push liquid into a different part of the motherboard.

4. Do NOT Use Rice

The rice myth needs to die. Rice does almost nothing for water damage and adds rice dust to your laptop's interior, which makes the eventual professional cleanup harder.

5. Do NOT Try to Power It On to Check

This is the single most common mistake. The laptop seems off, the spill seemed minor, and you want to check if it still works. So you press the power button.

If there's still liquid contacting circuits and you add power, you can turn a $200 repair into a $500 repair in one second. We've seen this dozens of times.

6. Get It to a Repair Shop Within 24 Hours

This is the part that actually matters. Most water damage is repairable if it's professionally cleaned within 24 hours. After that, corrosion sets in, and the percentage of recoverable laptops drops every day.

A water-damage cleaning at Technoland is typically $150-$300, depending on how much corrosion has already started and which components need replacement. We've been doing this since 1988.

Specific Notes by Liquid

Water (clean): Best case. Often fully recoverable.

Coffee, soda, juice, beer: Worse. The sugars and acids accelerate corrosion. Get it in fast.

Wine, especially red: Worse than soda. Treat as urgent.

Salt water (ocean, pool): The worst. Salt is extremely corrosive to electronics. The first-hour timeline matters even more.
