# Signs Your Laptop Battery Needs Replacement
Laptop batteries typically last 2-4 years before they start to degrade. Here are the signs it's time for a new one.
Rapid Battery Drain
If your laptop goes from 100% to dead in under an hour during normal use, the battery cells have likely degraded beyond useful life.
Swelling
A bulging battery is a safety hazard. If your trackpad feels raised, the laptop wobbles on a flat surface, or the bottom case is separating, stop using it immediately and bring it in.
Won't Hold Charge at All
If your laptop only works when plugged in, the battery is dead. This is the most common sign.
Unexpected Shutdowns
If your laptop shuts down at 30%, 20%, or other random percentages, the battery can no longer accurately report its charge level.
