# When to Repair vs. Replace Your Computer

This is the most common question I get at Technoland. Here's my honest take after 37 years of fixing computers.

Repair If...

The computer is less than 5 years old, the repair cost is under 50% of replacement cost, or it's a simple fix like a screen, battery, or storage upgrade. Also repair if you have specialized software that would be expensive or complicated to reinstall.

Replace If...

The computer is over 7 years old and needs a major repair, it can't run the current operating system, or multiple components are failing. Also consider replacing if the repair would cost more than half the price of a suitable new machine.

The Smart Middle Ground

Often, a targeted upgrade can extend a computer's useful life by 3-5 years at a fraction of replacement cost. An SSD upgrade, for instance, can transform a sluggish 4-year-old laptop.
