# Is Your Computer Worth Repairing? A Cost Guide for 2026

The general rule: if the repair costs more than 50% of what a comparable new computer would cost, it's usually better to replace it. But there are exceptions.

When to Repair

Repair makes sense when the fix is straightforward and affordable. Virus removal ($75-$150), RAM upgrades ($75-$150), SSD upgrades ($100-$200), and battery replacements ($75-$175) are almost always worth doing.

When to Replace

Consider replacing if your computer is over 7 years old and needs a major repair like a motherboard replacement. Also consider replacing if it can't run the latest operating system.

The Middle Ground

Sometimes a strategic upgrade can extend your computer's life by 3-5 years. Adding an SSD to an older computer, for example, can make it feel brand new for a fraction of the cost of replacement.
