# How to Protect Your Computer from Malware in 2026

The best malware protection combines good software with smart habits. Here's what I recommend to every customer who walks into Technoland.

Use Built-In Protection

Windows Defender has gotten very good. For most home users, it's all you need. Keep it enabled and up to date.

Keep Everything Updated

Most malware exploits known vulnerabilities that have already been patched. Enable automatic updates for your operating system and browsers.

Be Careful What You Click

The biggest threat is still phishing emails and fake download buttons. If something looks suspicious, don't click it. When in doubt, navigate directly to the website instead of clicking links in emails.

Use a Password Manager

Stop reusing passwords. A password manager like Bitwarden (free) creates and stores unique passwords for every site.
