# Data Backup 101: Don't Lose Your Files
Every week someone walks into Technoland with a dead hard drive and no backup. Don't be that person. Here's how to protect your files.
The 3-2-1 Rule
Keep 3 copies of your important data, on 2 different types of media, with 1 copy offsite. This sounds complicated but it's simpler than you think.
Easy Backup Options
An external hard drive ($50-$80) is the simplest option. Plug it in, set up automatic backups (Time Machine on Mac, File History on Windows), and you're protected.
Cloud Backup
Services like Google Drive, OneDrive, or iCloud automatically sync your files. Most offer 5-15GB free, and paid plans are affordable.
What to Backup
At minimum: photos, documents, financial records, and anything you can't replace. Don't worry about backing up programs — those can be reinstalled.
