"Hard drive repair" gets people at the counter more confused than almost anything else I deal with. There isn't really such a thing as repairing a hard drive in the way people picture it. What we actually do is replace the failing drive and recover whatever data can be pulled off the old one first — see our data recovery service for that half of the job. That's the honest description of the service, and I'd rather explain it up front than let anyone assume otherwise.


Symptoms of a Failing or Dead Drive


Drives rarely die with zero warning, though it can feel that way. Here's what I actually see at the bench.


  • Clicking or grinding noises, sometimes called the "click of death." This is almost always a mechanical hard drive, and it means stop using it immediately
  • Very slow boot times that keep getting worse week over week
  • Files that won't open, or that open corrupted, especially ones you haven't touched in a while
  • The computer freezes when accessing certain files or folders, but runs fine otherwise
  • Frequent Blue Screen of Death, especially with storage-related error codes
  • The drive disappears from the system entirely, showing up as unrecognized or not appearing at all
  • S.M.A.R.T. warnings, which is the drive's own built in health monitoring flagging a problem before total failure

  • If you're hearing clicking, the single most important thing I can tell you is to power the machine down and stop trying to boot it. Every additional power-on attempt on a mechanically failing drive risks further damage to the platters, which lowers the odds of getting your data back.


    What "Repair" Actually Means for a Hard Drive


    I want to be direct about this because it matters for what you're actually paying for. A hard drive is not something we open up and fix like a motherboard capacitor. Once the read/write heads or the platters themselves are damaged, that drive is done. There's no repairing it back to a working state.


    What "hard drive repair" means in practice is two separate things:


    1. Data recovery, pulling whatever files can still be read off the failing drive

    2. Drive replacement, installing a new drive and getting your operating system and software back up and running on it


    Sometimes people only need one of the two. If the drive died and you have everything backed up already, you just need a replacement drive installed, no recovery necessary. If the drive is dead but there was no backup, recovery is the priority and replacement comes after.


    For logical failures, meaning the drive spins up and is mechanically fine but the file system is corrupted or data was accidentally deleted, I can usually do the recovery work here at the bench. For physical failures, meaning damaged heads, seized motors, or platter damage, that requires cleanroom equipment I don't have in-house. Those cases get referred out to a specialty data recovery lab, and I'll tell you plainly when a drive is in that category instead of taking your money for something I can't actually deliver.


    SSD vs. HDD Failure: The Real Differences


    This is one of the more important things to understand, because the two technologies fail in completely different ways and it changes what's possible.


    Hard disk drives (HDD) are mechanical. They have spinning platters and a physical read/write head. When they fail, it's usually gradual, bad sectors accumulating, noise starting up, performance degrading over weeks or months. That gradual failure pattern is actually good news for you, because it often gives a window to get data off before total failure. Even after failure, if the damage is contained, there's frequently a recovery path.


    Solid state drives (SSD) have no moving parts, which is why they're faster and more durable against physical shock. But when an SSD fails, it often fails suddenly and completely, with far less warning than a mechanical drive gives you. There's no gradual grinding noise to tip you off. And when an SSD's controller chip or memory cells fail, data recovery is much harder and far more limited than with a mechanical drive, sometimes not possible at all at a reasonable cost. This surprises people who assume SSDs are simply "better" across the board. They're more reliable overall, but when they do go, recovery odds are usually worse, not better.


    The practical takeaway: don't let an SSD's reputation for reliability talk you out of backing up. It's precisely because SSD failure tends to be sudden and total that backups matter more, not less.


    Realistic Cost Ranges


    Every job starts with the $75 diagnostic, credited toward whatever work you approve. I don't give final numbers over the phone because I need the drive in hand to know what I'm actually dealing with.


  • Drive replacement only (no recovery needed, backup exists): typically $100 to $180 including the new drive and OS reinstall, depending on capacity and whether it's an HDD or SSD
  • Logical data recovery (drive spins, file system corrupted or files deleted): usually $100 to $250, done here at the bench
  • Recovery plus replacement combined (recovering data, then setting up a new drive): generally $150 to $400 depending on how much data needs to be pulled and how the recovery goes
  • Physical/mechanical recovery (clicking drive, seized motor, platter damage): this goes to a specialty cleanroom lab, and pricing there can run several hundred dollars and up depending on the lab and the extent of damage.   • SSD failures involving a dead controller chip often can't be recovered economically at all, and I'll tell you that straight rather than sending you to an expensive lab for long odds.

    Can a clicking hard drive be fixed?

    No, not in the sense of repairing it back to normal use. Clicking almost always means a mechanical problem with the read/write head or platters. The right move is to stop using the drive immediately and have the data recovered before attempting anything else, since continued use risks making recovery harder or impossible.


    Is data recovery guaranteed to work?

    No. Logical recovery, meaning corrupted file systems or accidental deletion on a mechanically healthy drive, has good odds. Physical damage, meaning clicking, grinding, or a drive that won't spin up, has much lower and less predictable odds, and I won't promise a result I can't guarantee.


    Why did my SSD die with no warning, when my old hard drive gave me weeks of warning?

    SSDs and HDDs fail differently. Mechanical drives usually degrade gradually with noise and slowdown as warning signs. SSDs have no moving parts, so failure is often sudden and complete, typically tied to the controller chip or memory cells wearing out. That's part of why backups matter even with SSDs, which people otherwise trust more for reliability.


    Do you do the actual data recovery in your shop, or send it out?

    For logical failures, the drive is mechanically fine but data is corrupted or deleted, I do that work myself at the bench. For physical failures requiring cleanroom conditions, I refer that out to a specialty lab, because that's not equipment a general repair shop has, and I'd rather be upfront about that than take money for a job I can't do right.

Either way, the fix is the same habit: back your data up somewhere separate from the drive itself.
