1. Your Hard Drive Is the Bottleneck

If your laptop was made before 2018 and you've never had it upgraded, it almost certainly has a spinning hard drive. Spinning drives have one job in 2026: making computers feel old.

The fix is replacing the hard drive with a solid-state drive (SSD). This single upgrade is the biggest performance improvement you can make to any pre-2018 laptop. Boot times drop from minutes to seconds. Programs open instantly.

A 500GB SSD installed in your existing laptop typically costs $150-$250 including the drive, the labor, and cloning your existing data over so you don't lose anything. Most are done same-day.

2. You Don't Have Enough RAM

In 2026, 8GB is the absolute minimum. 16GB is the comfortable amount for most people. If your laptop has 4GB, that's why it's struggling.

A RAM upgrade typically runs $75-$200 depending on the laptop. The catch: many newer laptops (most ultra-thin models, all modern MacBooks) have soldered RAM that can't be upgraded.

3. Malware or Bloatware

If your laptop suddenly got slow, malware is the first thing to check. Hidden processes running in the background can eat 50% or more of your CPU. So can pre-installed manufacturer software (HP, Dell, and Lenovo are the worst offenders) that runs constantly even when you don't use it.

4. The Operating System Needs a Reset

5. The Laptop Has Reached the End

Some laptops are too old to fix. Sub-$300 budget laptops from 2017 or earlier with weak processors have reached the end of useful life. No upgrade will make them feel fast, because the bottleneck is the processor itself, and processors aren't replaceable on most laptops.
