# Bring Your Own Parts to a Computer Repair Shop: Why Most Won't, and Why We Will
Most computer repair shops in Glendale won't install parts you bring in. Walk into a chain store with a SODIMM you bought off Amazon and they'll tell you no, or quote a labor charge that's higher than just buying their part. After 37 years on Verdugo Rd, I get why most shops do this. I also do it differently.
Why Most Shops Refuse
Three real reasons, and they're not unreasonable.
Parts markup is the actual margin. On a typical $250 RAM upgrade, the labor might be $60 and the parts might be $190 with a 25-40% markup baked in. Without that markup, the math on running a shop doesn't work for most operators. So they refuse customer parts to protect the margin.
Liability is messy. When a customer brings a part, three things can go wrong: the part is bad, the install fails for an unrelated reason, or the device dies a week later. In all three cases, customers tend to blame the shop. Some shops have learned the hard way that BYOP turns into Yelp drama. Refusing the work is easier.
Counterfeits are everywhere. I've seen counterfeit SSDs, fake DDR4, knockoff laptop screens with the right markings but the wrong panel, and "Apple" batteries that aren't. A shop installing a counterfeit can get blamed when it fails. Refusing all customer parts is a clean way to avoid that risk.
Why We Do It Anyway
Because some customers actually want to make the trade-off, and refusing their work just sends them somewhere worse.
I'd rather have a customer who's done their homework, ordered a real Crucial SSD or a Samsung NVMe drive, and just wants me to install it. They saved themselves $40 on parts markup and they got the same drive that I would have ordered. The labor is the same. Everyone's happy.
The trade-off is documented at intake. You initial a disclosure that says: no warranty on the part, no warranty on the labor, you assume all risk. If the part is dead, you eat it. If something fails a week later, that's on you. We charge our standard labor rate and we install carefully — but we don't pretend to back the work the way we back our own parts.
What We'll Install
Standardized components are the safest. RAM (DDR4, DDR5, SODIMM, ECC), SSDs and NVMe drives, GPUs, power supplies, case fans and CPU coolers, Wi-Fi cards. These are commodity parts where the failure modes are obvious and the install is quick.
We'll also install laptop screens if you've ordered the right panel. Bring the model number; we'll tell you before you order whether your specific replacement is compatible.
What We'll Refuse
Counterfeits. If we identify the part as counterfeit, recalled, or visibly damaged, we'll explain why and decline to install it. The diagnostic fee still applies.
Components that need pairing or firmware flashing without proper documentation. Some laptop batteries, MacBook screens, and certain SSDs need to be paired or firmware-flashed to work with the device. We'll tell you upfront whether your part needs that and whether we can do it.
BYOP installs without a diagnostic if the device hasn't already been confirmed to need that exact part. We strongly recommend the $75 diagnostic first. We've seen too many people show up with a $200 SSD when their problem was actually a failing motherboard. The diagnostic protects you from buying the wrong part.
Who BYOP Is Right For
If you know exactly what you need — say, a specific Crucial SSD because your existing drive is dying and you've already confirmed compatibility — BYOP makes sense. You save the markup, we install it.
If you're price-shopping repair quotes and trying to lower the bottom line, BYOP can help if you know the right part. If you don't, the diagnostic is a better starting point than ordering a part on guess.
If the device is critical — a small business workstation, a backup server, anything where downtime is expensive — I'd actually recommend against BYOP. Pay for OEM parts with a real warranty. The savings aren't worth the risk on production hardware.
The Honest Math
For a typical $250 RAM upgrade: BYOP saves you about $40-60 in markup on the parts. You pay our $75-150 labor either way. The break-even on whether BYOP is worth it depends on whether you're confident in the part you ordered. If you've ordered from Crucial, Samsung, Western Digital, or another reputable manufacturer through a legitimate retailer, BYOP is almost always worth it.

How to Set It Up

Then order the part, bring it in with the device, sign the BYOP disclosure at intake, and we'll install it.
